Notes

Written for fic_promptly back in February. Quite a different tone than my last AdamsApple-fic. The prompt was agape - show affection for the dead'.

As the dust settled, Lucifer watched the sinners of Cannibal Town collect the fallen exorcists.

He watched a group of them draw near, close enough for his wings to hit them should he spread them to their full width.

As he turned, his eyes met Adam’s body, painfully still. He’d spared him at Charlie’s request, only for him to die anyway. A painful, pathetic death, in the middle of spewing bile and hatred.

He should leave the cannibals to it, let them pick his body clean.

He took a step forward, blocking their path.

The cannibals paused, but as they made a move to pass him, he spread his wings. The look on his face was deadly.

“Leave him be.”

It was easy to see that his order annoyed them, but still, they backed off. Lucifer’s wings lowered, and he took a step back, turning around to look down at Adam.

He knelt beside him, and as he took a hold of him, he let himself be enveloped by his magic, instantly teleporting both him and Adam to his palace grounds.

His sigh was bone-deep as he sat down beside him, leaning his elbows on his knees as he watched him. His golden blood was still glowing, his body still warm as he reached out to touch, fingers resting against his cheek.

For as much as he had grown to hate Adam, there were still parts of him that had held on to their time together in the Garden. A time when they had gotten along, been friends, a time when wrapping his arms around him had felt as natural as wrapping them around Lilith.

So many things had changed since then.

Too many things that couldn’t be undone had happened, their relationship turning so sour it had become more toxic than the most bitter of poisons.

He shifted, leaning forward as he stood on his knees.

If he pressed his forehead to Adam’s, closing his eyes, he could almost imagine himself back in the Garden, Adam still alive, not yet the man he had become. Alive, happy. His best friend.

Almost something more than that, but never quite daring to go there.

Swapped glances, hidden smiles, all lingering in his mind as his eyes slipped back open.

He pressed his lips to Adam’s, already feeling them start to cool.

The first and final kiss he would ever get to give him.

“A part of me still loved you, you know,” he said, though he knew Adam could no longer hear him.

Maybe that was why he was able to finally say it. When Adam was alive, he could never bring himself to admit it, not when Adam treated him so terribly after his time in Heaven, and Lucifer’s time in Hell. “It’s fucking stupid, I know. You’d laugh in my face if you could hear me.”

He ran his fingertips along his cheek.

“Getting to finally punch you in the face still felt pretty good, though.”

Lucifer laughed, a joyless, empty laugh.

When he pulled back his hand, he found it stained with blood.

He closed it into a fist, held above his heart.

“I should’ve let them eat you, it’s not like you deserved any better than that. After all this time.”

But he couldn’t let them.

It would make him no better than them, if he’d let them eat him right before his eyes.

Standing, he looked down at Adam. He would dig him a proper grave, deep, deep down in Hell’s heavy soil. Deep enough that no cannibal would be able to find him, no matter how good a nose they might have.

He would leave the grave unmarked by any headstone, safe and undisturbed.

Maybe plant the closest thing Hell had to an orange tree on top of it. Adam had always liked oranges, back during their time in the garden.

With his magic, he opened up a hole so deep no one would ever find his body again, letting it float down into it. Soon, the only sign that anything had changed was some upturned grass.

He rested his hand against the ground, reaching out with his senses to find Adam’s body, hidden from everyone but him.

His lips parted in a smile, grief tugging at his heart despite it all.

“Good bye, Adam.”
